Junior Announcement from the School Nurse-Nurse Kim

Good evening, parents of rising seniors. In the next few weeks your student will be bringing home a letter stating they will need the 2nd meningitis vaccine that is required by North Carolina law for all seniors. They will need to bring a copy of their immunization record as proof that they have received it by the 30th day of school for the 2026/2027 school year. If your student does not have the vaccine on or before the 30th day of school next fall, school year 2026-27, per NC General Statute 130A-155, they will be excluded from school until the vaccine is received. Please schedule an appointment for your child as soon as you can to ensure your student is able to get this vaccine prior to the deadline. If your student has already received the vaccine, please send in the proof of vaccination and disregard any future messages regarding this requirement. Thank you and have a great week. Nurse Kim

Financial Aid and Scholarships

Title: Federal and State Financial Aid Updates
Date: February 24
Time: 1:00 pm

We have many important financial aid updates from the federal and state level to share with you, including new updates from Federal Student Aid, state FAFSA progress, and an overview of state aid available to our students. If you missed one of our winter financial aid regional trainings or would just like a refresher, join this session so that you can stay up to date on recent laws and trends that impact your students.

Title: How to Use Your FAFSA Data Strategically
Date: February 20
Time: 11:00 am

Did you know that over 12,000 NC high school seniors didn’t complete the FAFSA until the summer after graduation? We want our students to receive financial help earlier in the year, so they don't miss out on aid that is distributed on a first come, first-served basis. In this session, we’ll share how to use your FAFSA data strategically to set a FAFSA goal so that you can begin mobilizing support in your community to finish out the spring semester strong! Over 40% of seniors have earned an estimated $88 million in Pell grants already -- let's get to 66% so those that want to go to college will have the funds to do so.

Scholarships
First up, students from rural North Carolina may be interested in a Golden LEAF Colleges and Universities Scholarship. This one is for high school seniors and community college transfer students, and it's renewable.

Second, students who wants to go to NC State, UNC-Chapel Hill, or UNC-Greensboro, they may want to consider the Aubrey Lee Brooks Scholarship. It’s for residents of one of the 14 counties listed in the slide below and offers $12,000 a year to students.

The scholarship is renewable, and additional funds are available for study abroad, internships, and other education-enhancing experiences.

Freshman Seminar Pathway Spotlight -- This week, our 9th grade early college students explored two hands-on health science pathways: Medical Assistant (MA) and Occupational Therapy Assistant (OTA). Ms. Kassi Raffalt introduced students to Medical Assisting through activities like tying tourniquets, using a vein viewer, and practicing on a geriatric simulation arm. Dr. Kathy Subasic helped students learn what OTAs do, identify how different healthcare roles work together, and experience activities such as writing with their non-dominant hand and completing puzzles to understand how OT supports daily living skills.
Watch the pathway preview videos at home (these are in the Google Drive folder previously shared with you):

Curriculum plans for all early college pathways can be found here: https://cabarruscollege.edu/admissions/early-college.

Early College Students – Badge Reminder
Please remind your student to bring their college badge every day for their classes on the Cabarrus College campus. Students must have their badge visible to enter the building and attend class. Students who arrive without their badge will not be permitted in the college building and will miss class or exams for that day.

Juniors: Attend Transfer Readiness (Transfer Information Night) — Monday, February 23 from 6-7:30pm via Zoom
This event is designed for junior Life Sciences and Medical Assistant juniors graduating in May 2027, but all juniors are welcome. We will cover key information about preparing to transfer, what to expect during the application process, and important next steps as you plan for your academic pathway after Cabarrus College. The Zoom link for this session was included in the calendar invite to juniors!

Eligible Juniors and Seniors — Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) Honor Society
The Beta Delta Chi Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa recognizes leadership, scholarship, and service among two‑year college students. Eligibility is based on the following criteria: completion of at least 12 semester hours in a degree program at Cabarrus College of Health Sciences and a cumulative GPA of 3.25 or higher. Those who have met this requirement have received an email from PTK. New members are formally inducted during the Spring Induction Ceremony taking place in April. I encourage eligible student to consider taking advantage of this opportunity!
Seniors: Volunteer Hours Reminder - Due March 30
As we prepare for May graduation, this is a reminder about the 15 required volunteer hours. Hours from sophomore year (Fall 2023) and beyond count toward this requirement. All hours must be submitted in the Pro Bono tab in Sonis no later than Monday of Week 12 — March 30th. You must review the Volunteer Handbook to confirm eligible volunteer sites. The handbook also includes an important Social Drivers of Health reflection question, which must be answered as part of your Sonis submission. Please ensure your hours are completed and submitted by the deadline so you remain on track for graduation. Diplomas will be held at graduation if not completed by Week 12.
